Nadigar Sangam Faces Criticism for Not Honoring Vijayakanth After His Death

On December 28, 2023, Captain Vijayakanth, one of Tamil Nadu’s most well-known actors and respected leaders, passed away, leaving the whole country in sadness. Following his pneumonia-related death at a private hospital in Chennai, his party, DMDK, released a statement stating that he had been diagnosed with COVID-19 and was on ventilator support. Notably, the actor has a reputation for helping many people with their problems. He once came to be known as the South Indian Artistes’ Association, Nadigar Sangam,’s lifesaver. The same organization is now under fire for failing to give the late actor the proper homage.

According to reports, internet users are furiously criticizing Nadigar Sangam for failing to honour Vijayakanth after his death. There are rumors that prominent figures like Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar, Rajinikanth, and Kamal Haasan accompanied the funeral procession of another great actor, Sivaji Ganesan, when he died away on July 21, 2001, as a mark of respect. Several renowned filmmakers, like Mani Ratnam and Bharathiraja, also made an effort to say goodbye to the actor. After he passed away, the association’s former president, Vijayakanth, was not given the respect he deserved.

Actor Vishal, who is also the general secretary of Nadigar Sangam, expressed his sorrow over Vijayakanth’s passing in a message on social media. “I came to hear about the death of ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth,” the writer stated. Please pardon me, Annae. Pardon me, please. To be honest, right now I should be by your side, stroking your feet and taking one glance at your face. I apologize for not being in the nation right now; it was my error. The association’s treasurer, actor Karthi, also sent a message of sympathy on social media.

Many criticized the actors for not showing up for Vijayakanth’s funeral after reading the message. It is also being emphasized that, despite Vijayakanth’s lengthy affiliation with Nadigar Sangam, none of these performers attended the actor’s burial in his honor. Notably, Nadigar Sangam was founded in 1952 by renowned performers MGR (MG Ramachandran), Sivaji Ganesan, and MR Radha. When the actor became the organization’s president, it was heavily indebted. With his strategic approach, Vijayakanth was able to salvage the union, and he is largely responsible for the film industry’s continued smooth operation.
