Based mostly on rising costs for onions and tomatoes, a vegetarian thali went up 7% in price in February, according to rating agency Crisil.

In its monthly “Roti Rice Rate” report, published on Friday, Crisil Market Intelligence and Analysis said that a 9 percent decrease in chicken prices resulted in a decrease in the cost of non-vegetarian thali.

It said that the price of a vegetable thali, which includes roti, rice, dal, curd, and salad along with veggies (onions, tomatoes, and potatoes), went up to Rs 27.50 per plate in February from Rs 25.60 in the same month last year.

“The price of the vegetable thali went up because onion and tomato prices increased by 29% and 38% year over year, respectively,” the statement said, noting that the cost of rice and lentils also increased.

Still, the thali was less expensive than the Rs 28 from the previous month of January.

The price of the non-vegetarian thali, which has all the same components but chicken instead of dal, decreased to Rs 54 from Rs 59.20 a year earlier, although it was still more expensive than it was in January at Rs 52.

It said that the main cause of the year-over-year drop in the price of non-vegetarian thali was a 20% decrease in the cost of broiler prices, which account for 50% of the total price.

According to the research, the bird flu epidemic in Andhra Pradesh affected supply and raised demand ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, resulting in a 10% rise in broiler prices when compared with January.
